School Eye Health - AFED Igbogbo Bayeku Outreach

Introduction

Igbogbo Bayeku is a community within Ikorodu, located in the north-eastern part of Lagos State. The area is traditionally inhabited by the Ijebu and Remo sub-groups of the Yoruba people, with the local economy primarily based on trading, farming, and fishing.

In this community, there are numerous low-fee schools serving children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. These children often face challenges such as limited access to quality eye care, financial constraints that hinder effective treatment, and a general lack of awareness regarding eye health. Many of these schools operate under the Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFED), an internationally recognized organization that supports low-fee schools catering to children from low-income families.

The Outreach

As part of its mission to enhance educational achievement through improved vision, Restore Foundation launched a School Eye Health intervention in Igbogbo Bayeku. On May 21st and 22nd, 2024, twenty-six (26) schools participated, with 332 students receiving treatment for various eye conditions and vision issues, out of 2,001 students screened. These students were identified by their teachers, who had previously received training in vision screening, and each school was provided with a free Vision Test Kit..
