Introduction
Albinism, a genetic condition characterized by the absence or reduction of melanin pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes, poses various challenges to individuals affected by it. Common features include light or white hair, pale skin, and light-colored or translucent irises, often leading to vision problems such as photophobia and reduced visual acuity.
The underlying cause of albinism lies in specific gene mutations that impact melanin production. However, with appropriate care and support, individuals with albinism can lead fulfilling lives and achieve their goals. Essential factors in managing the challenges associated with albinism and promoting overall well-being include education, access to vision aids, and sun protection.
Vision Problems
One of the significant hurdles faced by people with albinism is impaired vision due to structural differences in their eyes and complex refractive errors, which affect their ability to focus. Moreover, their reduced ability to see clearly in bright illumination further contributes to their overall low vision, making academic work challenging. Consequently, there is a high drop-out rate and poor academic performance among children with albinism, often exacerbated by widespread ignorance about available support.
RFCS Intervention
In an effort to make a positive impact on the lives of children with albinism, the Restore Foundation organized a 3-day eye health outreach program in May 2022. During this event, 128 children with albinism received vision testing, comprehensive eye examinations, and appropriate treatments. This included the provision of photochromic glasses, vision aids, eye drops, and even cataract surgeries, all free of charge. The outreach was conducted in collaboration with the Lagos Albinism Awareness Society.

Children's Day Presentation
The outreach program was concluded on June 29th, 2022, coinciding with the global celebration of Children’s Day. The day featured a public lecture titled “Albinism and the Eye – Know the Facts,” followed by the main event: the presentation of medicated eyeglasses and other vision aids to the beneficiaries. The age range of the recipients varied from 5 months to 17 years.
