School Eye Health - NAOWA & Command Schools Lagos
Introduction
The NAOWA Nursery and Primary Schools are run and managed by the Nigerian Army Officers Wife’s Association (NAOWA) while the Command Children Schools and Command Day Secondary Schools are managed by the Nigeria Army Education corps (NAEC). These places of learning were established primarily to cater for the children of army personnel within the division they are posted. The schools also cater to other civilian members of the society living in the same environment.
The schools referenced in this outreach are under the 81 division, Lagos.
The Outreach
Restore Foundation took its School Eye Health Intervention to all schools under the 81 Division Nigerian Army and Nigeria Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) Lagos State. These comprised seven NAOWA Nursery and Primary Schools in Ikeja, Badagry, Bonny Camp, Yaba, Ikorodu, Ojo and Owode; four Command Children Schools in Ikeja, Ojo, Yaba and Bonny Camp and three Command Day Secondary Schools at Ikeja, Ojo and Oshodi.
Restore Foundation carried out a 4-day intervention from Tuesday 5th to Friday 8th February 2024. The interventions took place at different venues with Ikeja, Ojo, Oshodi and Bonny camp taking turns to host the outreach.
It began with a training session for teachers of the schools in acquiring the ability to carry out a vision screen test for students utilizing the free test kits given to each school for continuous usage for vision screening of students at their schools.

Concluding The Outreach
A total of 281 teachers were trained. They screened 3,414 children and referred some for intervention.
398 (Three hundred and ninety-eight) spectacles and 314 eyedrops were given to those determined to be in need of it. A total of 12 eyes required surgery which would be facilitated by the foundation in conjunction with the 81 Division of the Nigeria Army.

Presentation Ceremony
The official presentation ceremony for the School Eye Health outreach, organized by the Nigerian Army Officers Wife’s Association (NAOWA) and the Nigerian Army Education Corps (NAEC) schools, took place on Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including the host, Major General MT Usman, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Major General BA Tsoho, Director of Nigerian Army Education Corps (NAEC), Brig Gen OB Davies, 81 Division Training Officer, Brig Gen HM Bukar, Commander 81 Division Garrison, Brig Gen UD Ibokwe, Commander 104 Division Equipment Support ( DES), Col CI Nwonyi, Commander 81 Division Provost Group, Lt. Colonel OD Bamteko, Ag. Director of Education for the 81 Division Education Services, and Lt Col SO Omoyeni, Commandant of Command Day Secondary School (CDSS) Ikeja. Captain Yakubu, Administrative Officer (AO) CDSS Ikeja Pharm. (Mrs) Rekiya M. T. Usman, Chairperson of NAOWA 81 Division, led the presentation ceremony.
During the ceremony, free eyeglasses were distributed to students identified with vision impairments during the school eye health vision screening exercise. These eyeglasses are expected to improve their vision, thereby empowering them with a brighter future.
