School Eye Health - Owutu-Ishawo
Introduction
Ikorodu is a large area in Lagos State, located in the north Eastern part of the state, traditionally occupied by the Ijebu and Remo sub-group of the Yoruba tribes. It is made up of several neighbourhoods along a huge stretch of land and water ways.
Ikorodu division is made up of communities like Imota, Isiu, Liadi, Egbin, Ijede, Igbogbo, Bayeku and many others. The main occupations of the residents include trading, farming and fishing.
There are many low-fee paying schools scattered around the Ikorodu neighbourhoods, which serve children from the low socio-economic strata. Such children live in communities with a high level of ignorance, poor access to quality eye care and poor finances limiting ability to procure effective eyecare treatments.
The Outreach
In line with the purpose and objectives of our school eye health outreach programs, the focus of this outreach was to take qualitative eye care to children in 28 Low fee-paying schools under the umbrella of AFED (Association for Formidable Educational Development) in the Owutu-Ishawo area of Ikorodu. The planned four-day outreach lasted from the 3rd of May 2023 to 6th of May 2023

Outreach Conclusion
A total of 1,778 school children benefitted from vision testing and qualitative eye examinations with treatments given instantly. 486 eye medications were given free to treat medical eye diseases. 103 pairs of glasses were given free to aid vision in those who required such, the glasses were presented on Children’s Day. Eight children in need of eye surgeries will be done free of charge to aid them.
The mission to restore vision and quality of life to disadvantaged children continues in ernest within Ikorodu.
