School Eye Health Intervention By AFED Shomolu & Bariga Branch
Introduction
Shomolu and Bariga are vibrant suburbs located in the northern part of Lagos State. Shomolu features a blend of residential and commercial zones, while Bariga—originally part of Shomolu Local Government until its elevation in 2013—is bordered by the coastal waters near the Third Mainland Bridge. Despite their energy and population density, these areas include two of Lagos State’s largest slum communities, where overcrowding, poor sanitation, and limited access to safe water are major challenges.
Within these underserved communities, there are numerous low-fee private schools catering to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of these schools operate under the Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFED), a globally recognized network supporting affordable education for low-income families. Sadly, most of these children face limited access to quality eye care, compounded by a lack of awareness and financial constraints.
The Interventions
On May 15th, 2025, Restore Foundation launched a School Eye Health initiative, aligned with our mission to enhance educational outcomes through better vision. In this phase of the program, 25 schools participated, and out of 1,797 students screened by trained teachers using free vision test kits, 207 children were identified for further eye care and treatment.
This teacher-led screening model empowered schools to detect vision problems early, thanks to prior training sessions conducted by the Foundation and the provision of essential tools (Free Vision Screening Kits) for in-school use.

Concluding The Programme
The outcome of the program was significant.
49 bottles of medicated eye drops were distributed at no cost.
28 children received free prescription glasses, which were proudly presented on Children’s Day (May 29, 2025).
6 students were referred for eye surgery to correct more severe visual impairments.
By restoring sight, we are restoring hope—helping children learn better, dream bigger, and reach their full potential.
