School Eye Health - Agboyi-Ketu
Introduction
Agboyi-Ketu is a city in Lagos, Nigeria. It is close to Mile 12 Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and is one of the fifty-seven local government areas of Lagos State, Nigeria. Its headquarter is located in Alapere.
The local government was created by the former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who served from May 29, 1999 to May 29, 2007.
Agboyi land is a community of about two million residents with a considerable percentage of children as is the case in every community in Nigeria. It comprises of Agboyi 1, 2 and 3, Agboyi land is spread between Alapere and Ogudu in the south of the local council. Surrounded by water, residents typically make it in and out of the community by canoes.
There are no hospitals in the community and they certainly have no eye care facilities. Eye conditions are either neglected or treated with herbal concoctions, most of which are harmful.
The Outreach
Restore Foundation carried out a four-day eye health outreach for children in the Agboyi community. From our office in mainland Surulere, we drove to Agboyi Jetty and we were taken across the murky waters in motorized canoes to get to the riverine community on two of the four days. The other two days were spent inland where more of the disadvantaged children were located there.

This eye care medical outreach for AFED-affiliated schools in the community was preceded by a 5-minute boat ride and other preparatory work by Team Restore

During the 4-day outreach, over 800 children were seen and examined; over two hundred bottles of free eyedrops were given to those with medical eye problems mainly allergic in nature. 79 pairs of spectacles were given and 4 eyes that required cataract surgery got it done. All treatments were free of any charge.
The Agboyi outreach concluded on 24th November 2022.
