School Eye Health Outreach: Lagos State Education District 5
Introduction & Context
Lagos State Education District 5 is a vast administrative zone encompassing four key areas: Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, and Badagry. The district comprises 156 junior and senior secondary schools, serving a massive student population of over 73,000 children.
Students in this district predominantly come from low-income households where financing professional eye care is an extreme challenge. Furthermore, many of these schools are located in remote, riverine communities completely cut off from the mainland. This geography creates a double dilemma: a total absence of local eye care facilities and personnel within the communities, coupled with difficult, long-distance travel to access healthcare on the mainland.
The Outreach
To bridge this gap and deliver high-quality, comprehensive eye care directly to these underserved students, Restore Foundation for Child Sight (RFCS) launched a targeted 4-day School Eye Health Intervention.
The program ran from June 25th to July 4th, 2026, dedicating one intensive day of clinical care to each of the district’s four zones:
Ojo Zone: June 25, 2026
Badagry Zone: July 2, 2026
Ajeromi-Ifelodun Zone: July 3, 2026
Amuwo-Odofin Zone: July 4, 2026
Prior to the clinical outreach, local school teachers were trained in basic pediatric vision screening to identify and flag students experiencing visual difficulties, ensuring that the medical team could directly treat the children most in need.

Conclusion: Key Achievements
This extensive intervention stands as one of Restore Foundation’s most impactful deployments, bringing life-altering medical care to 3,822 students who were previously isolated from healthcare access.
By distributing over 3,700 immediate treatments (free prescription glasses and medical eye drops) and clearing path-to-sight surgery pathways for 65 children, this outreach successfully removed visual impairment as a barrier to education. For these riverine and vulnerable communities, the intervention means thousands of students can now return to their classrooms with clear vision, renewed confidence, and an equal opportunity to excel academically.
