School Eye Health Intervention By NAPPS & LEAMSP, Mushin Branch

Introduction

Mushin, a densely-populated Local Government Area in Lagos State, is a suburban hub of trade and transportation with a mix of residential and commercial activity. Despite its economic significance, it faces challenges like overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure, with a large percentage of economically-disadvantaged residents. Schoolchildren in Mushin have poor access to proper eye care, leading many to rely on potentially harmful traditional eye medications or over-the-counter self-medication, which can even cause blindness. To address this, the Restore Foundation conducted a free eye health intervention in schools, under the auspices of the Mushin branches of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) and the League of Muslim School Proprietors (LEAMSP).

The Interventions

The initiative commenced with a teacher training program. Educators from participating schools learned to conduct basic vision screenings and identify potential eye problems requiring professional attention by recognizing observable symptoms.

Subsequently, on-site interventions were conducted at school premises to treat children identified through the teachers’ screening efforts.

These interventions took place on February 11th and 12th, 2025. Schools gathered at two central locations: Frontiers Heroes School on Tuesday, February 11th, and P&P Comprehensive College on Wednesday, February 12th.
