Integrated Community Eye & Health Outreach: Epe & Badagry
Introduction & Context
Epe and Badagry are two historic, culturally rich administrative districts in Lagos State. Epe, located along the northern shores of the Lagos Lagoon, relies heavily on fishing and agriculture. Badagry, situated near the Benin Republic border, is world-renowned for its heritage as a key hub during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Despite their historical importance, both regions encompass large low-income settlements and remote coastal communities with severely limited access to essential healthcare. For children in these areas, unaddressed vision problems and general health challenges often go undetected, significantly impacting their quality of life and academic potential.
The Outreach
In line with our mission at Restore Foundation for Child Sight (RFCS)—to boost educational attainment and secure brighter futures through better vision—we participated in a comprehensive multi-disciplinary outreach from January 5th to 12th, 2026.
This initiative was executed in strategic collaboration with Dr. Ferguson’s Team (specialists in dental and mental health), Green Fountain Medical Services, and Brainy Educare Services.
The program was executed in two distinct phases:
Phase 1: Capacity Building & Health Education (Jan 5–6, 2026)
Hosted at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) for visiting students and educators.
Covered vital topics including malaria management, oral hygiene, teenage mental health, and pediatric eye health.
Educators were trained in pediatric vision screening, and participating schools received free vision test kits for ongoing monitoring.
Phase 2: Grassroots Clinical Outreaches (Jan 8–12, 2026)
Clinical interventions provided free specialized eye, dental, and mental health care directly to underserved families in Epe (Jan 8–9) and Badagry (Jan 11–12).
Children previously identified with visual impairment during preliminary screenings were brought forward for advanced clinical care.

Conclusion: Key Achievements
This collaborative outreach delivered holistic, multi-specialty care directly to two of Lagos State’s most vulnerable coastal districts. By pairing community-level clinical care with capacity-building seminars at CMUL, the initiative provided immediate, life-changing eye care to 621 children while equipping local schools with the knowledge and tools to catch vision defects early.

Through 760 direct treatments (medications and prescription glasses) and 35 surgical pathways opened, Restore Foundation and its partners successfully broke down geographic and financial barriers to health, ensuring these children can return to the classroom with clear vision and renewed potential.
